The World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as “a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity”. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) embodies this definition by approaching health holistically through acupuncture therapy.
What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is an all-natural medicine refined over many thousands of years. It’s proven science – we are made of energy. Everything, including the human body, is simply energy stored in mass particle form. When these energies are blocked or deficient, this disrupts our overall health, resulting in pain or illness. Acupuncture needles stimulate specific points along energy meridians, which helps to restore balance and optimal health.
People often seek acupuncture care when their symptoms are multi-layered or complicated. Often, where Western Medical treatment lacks, Acupuncture shines. If you have symptoms your doctor cannot diagnose or a condition that has not been completely resolved, acupuncture is an incredible treatment option.
Acupuncture care is uniquely tailored to each patient by treating the root cause behind many everyday health complaints (without the unwanted side effects of medication). Acupuncture is also a fantastic option for those interested in overall health and long-term preventative care, even if they do not have any specific medical complaints. Patients feel more energetic, calm, emotionally balanced, positive, and resistant to stress with regularly scheduled treatments.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes acupuncture as an effective treatment for many common disorders. The list below encompasses both symptoms and diseases acupuncture can treat.
- Emotional/Psychological Symptoms
- Gastrointestinal Disorders
- Eye, Ear, Nose, Throat, Respiratory Disorders
- Circulatory Disorders
- Gynecological/Genitourinary Disorders
- Immune Disorders
- Musculoskeletal and Neurological Disorders
- Chemotherapy/Radiation Side Effects
- Diabetes
- Dermatological Disorders (acne, eczema, psoriasis)
- Cosmetic Concerns
Do The Needles Hurt?
Acupuncture needles are often not even felt when inserted. Occasionally patients may experience a small brief sensation, dissipating several seconds after insertion. Even the most sensitive patients are surprised by how painless and profoundly relaxing the experience is.
How Does Acupuncture Work?
Increases circulation for better blood flow to injured or deficient areas of the body while flushing out waste products and toxins.
Releases muscle tension & pain by stimulating trigger points. Trigger points are tender areas of tight muscle fibers. When stimulated with acupuncture needles, these areas release tension. The needles stimulate the body’s own healing mechanisms at the site of the pain, releasing histamines, which relax blood vessels and increase blood flow into the area.
Produces endorphins that help relieve pain, reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, and improve your sense of well-being.
Reduces stress by activating the parasympathetic nervous system (rest, relax & digest) and reducing the output of cortisol – the stress hormone.
Stimulates the parasympathetic system We only heal in a parasympathetic state. When the parasympathetic nervous system is activated, it slows our heart and breathing rates, lowers blood pressure, and promotes digestion. Our body enters a state of relaxation, and this relaxation breeds recovery. The more time we spend in this state, the healthier we are!
Regulates the immune system through the activation of T-cells and nitric oxide. Nitric oxide is recognized as one of the most versatile players in the immune system. It is involved in the pathogenesis and control of infectious diseases, tumors, autoimmune processes, and chronic degenerative diseases. Acupuncture strengthens the body’s defenses against colds, flu, allergies, autoimmune conditions, and inflammation. Acupuncture needles can stimulate both red and white blood cell production.
Reduces inflammation Through the mechanisms mentioned above, acupuncture regulates the inflammatory response. Improper and out-of-control Inflammation is at the root of most contemporary diseases. Less inflammation equates to a longer and higher quality of life.
Regulates the central nervous system. Electroacupuncture uses a small machine that emits a painless electromagnetic pulse to regulate the central nervous system. Depending on the frequency and amplitude used for treatment, a variety of chemicals can be targeted, such as GABA, beta-endorphins, serotonin, ACTH, and many others.
The X factor. Despite ongoing research, we don’t know everything about how acupuncture works on the body. Sometimes acupuncture has seemingly miraculous results that can only be experienced and are not yet fully understood.
